by Chaz Stevens, Mayoral Candidate for Deerfield Beach
TL;DR:
As Mayor, I am committed to making mental health care accessible, compassionate, and effective for every Deerfield Beach resident. This plan brings together local providers, hospitals, and online platforms to offer affordable and readily available services, from in-person counseling and telehealth to crisis response teams. Working together, we can make mental health care a foundational part of our community, supporting every resident’s well-being. Join me in bringing this essential change to Deerfield Beach.
Expanding Mental Health Access in Deerfield Beach: A Community-Focused Plan for Care and Support
Access to mental health care should be a right, not a privilege. But for many, accessing affordable, quality mental health services can be a challenge. As Mayor of Deerfield Beach, I am committed to changing that. Our community deserves a full, compassionate mental health support system that is easy to access, tailored to meet diverse needs, and offers real help when it’s needed most.
To achieve this, we will launch a multi-faceted mental health initiative, with programs built through partnerships with local mental health providers, hospitals, and even online telehealth services. This plan will provide care to residents in every neighborhood, with a focus on both immediate crisis help and long-term support. Here’s how I’ll lead this initiative to ensure everyone in Deerfield Beach has access to the mental health care they deserve.
Building a Community-Centric Mental Health System
Our first goal is to make sure Deerfield Beach residents have access to mental health care in ways that are easy, affordable, and approachable. We’ll do this by introducing a blend of in-person and online services to meet different needs.
1. Telehealth and Mobile Mental Health Services
– Why It Matters: Many people may struggle to get to a clinic due to work, transportation, or other challenges. With telehealth, we can bring counseling and support right to people’s homes.
– The Plan: As Mayor, I will partner with online mental health platforms, like BetterHelp, to offer residents discounted or even free telehealth sessions. Through telehealth, residents can connect with licensed therapists and counselors via phone or video calls.
– Mobile Units for On-the-Go Care: We’ll also introduce mobile mental health units. These will bring licensed professionals directly to neighborhoods, making it easy for residents to receive help even if they can’t travel. Mobile units will focus on high-need areas, providing regular services and ensuring nobody in our community is left without access to care.
2. Community Mental Health Clinics
– Why It Matters: Many people benefit most from in-person support. A community clinic can provide a welcoming environment where residents feel comfortable getting care.
– The Plan: As part of this initiative, I will work to establish mental health clinics within existing city-owned spaces. These clinics will offer affordable counseling, addiction support, family therapy, and more. By using a sliding-fee scale, we’ll ensure that no one is turned away due to financial barriers.
– Sustainability: Our clinics will be supported through partnerships and grants, so we can keep services affordable over the long term. This will be a sustainable, welcoming resource for Deerfield Beach residents to receive care close to home.
Partnering with Key Institutions for a Strong Network
Bringing quality mental health care to our community will require the combined efforts of multiple organizations. Partnerships with hospitals, non-profits, and local providers will ensure that we have a strong foundation for this initiative.
1. Collaboration with Local Providers
– Why It Matters: Local therapists and counselors understand our community’s needs and are trusted resources. By involving local providers, we create a connected care network.
– The Plan: As Mayor, I will reach out to Deerfield Beach’s mental health providers and clinics to establish collaboration agreements. Providers can offer services at reduced rates with city support, bringing more affordable care to residents.
– Joint Community Events: Together, we’ll host mental health fairs, workshops, and screenings throughout the year. These events will increase awareness and allow residents to meet local providers in a friendly, supportive setting.
2. Partnerships with Hospitals like Broward Health
– Why It Matters: Hospitals like Broward Health have the resources and expertise to offer specialized mental health care.
– The Plan: I will work with Broward Health to develop mental health “hotlines” and clinics dedicated to Deerfield Beach residents. We’ll also apply jointly for grants, which will fund initiatives like crisis intervention teams and mobile units.
– Training and Resources: Hospitals can also help train our first responders and mental health navigators. With hospital-backed training, our community support workers will be prepared to offer safe, effective care that complements hospital services.
3. Leveraging Online Platforms for Wider Reach
– Why It Matters: Online services expand access, allowing us to reach residents who might not otherwise seek in-person care.
– The Plan: By partnering with telehealth platforms like BetterHelp, we can provide subsidized or free online sessions for residents. This will ensure that anyone who needs help can access it privately from their home.
– On-Site Sign-Up: We’ll also place telehealth kiosks in community centers and libraries, where residents can easily sign up or start a session with a professional. With technology, we can make mental health care accessible to everyone.
Creating Specialized Crisis Response and Support
Another core piece of this plan will be developing a specialized mental health crisis response system. By dedicating resources to crisis support, we can ensure residents in need of immediate help are connected to the right services.
1. Mental Health Crisis Response Teams
– Why It Matters: Not all emergencies require police involvement. A dedicated mental health response team can safely support residents experiencing a mental health crisis.
– The Plan: We’ll create crisis response teams staffed by mental health professionals trained to handle crises. These teams will coordinate with Deerfield Beach’s police and EMS, reducing the strain on traditional emergency services.
– Immediate and Compassionate Care: This team will focus on de-escalating situations and connecting individuals to long-term support, helping to prevent repeated crises and hospitalizations.
2. Training First Responders and Community Leaders
– Why It Matters: Community leaders and first responders often encounter mental health needs first. Training them will empower these leaders to offer compassionate, informed support.
– The Plan: We’ll launch training programs for our police, fire, and community leaders, helping them recognize and respond to mental health needs. With training, our city can offer a more supportive response across all community services.
Long-Term Support with Community Navigators
1. Establishing Community Navigators
– Why It Matters: Navigating mental health services can be confusing. Community navigators will be there to guide residents, answer questions, and connect them with the right services.
– The Plan: Our navigators will work at clinics, mobile units, and community centers. They’ll follow up with residents, ensuring continuity of care, and help individuals access additional resources, from therapy to support groups.
Measuring Success and Sustaining the Program
To keep this program effective and sustainable, we’ll set clear goals and measure progress. Regular reviews will allow us to make improvements based on community feedback.
1. Setting Metrics: We’ll track attendance, utilization rates, and community feedback to measure the success of each service.
2. Adjustments and Improvements: Quarterly meetings with partners will help refine services and ensure we’re meeting residents’ needs.
